My love for artichokes may have played a role in my choice of paint colors for Week 3 of the One Room Challenge. Doesn’t the Sherwin Williams Artichoke paint look delicious(pun intended) with the stained wood bench? I am loving this color! However, before I was able to do any painting, the built-in needed to be updated. Check out the before and in progress pictures.
Before In Progress
As you can see, we added an additional shelf to the built-in. Not only did it create extra storage space, it also made the room seem so much taller!! The original bench was white MDF board. It worked great, but I wanted to add some natural wood accents to the room and the bench was the perfect location.
The bench is made of 3 – 1 x6 boards that we glued together with wood glue and clamps. The bench face was another 1×6 cut to size and nailed to the front of the bench after install. I stained the bench Rust-oleum Briarsmoke. It is earthy brown color…my favorite stain at the moment!
I taped everything off and used a sprayer to paint the built-in and wainscoting. Spraying always gives the best finish. I have tried a variety of sprayers over the years, but the Husky HVLP Sprayer is is the best sprayer for this type of project. I am planning to post a sprayer tutorial soon…it is that good!

All of my projects never seem to go exactly as planned. Originally I had decided to keep the door white. However, after I saw the green…I wondered how it would look like black. This is only the primer coat because I wanted to stare at it for a while before my final decision. What do you think?

It has been an awesome week! If all goes as planned, I am hoping to finish up all of the painting before the weekend and start building the rustic 2×4 table. Crossing my fingers!
I love the color, and I love artichokes too.
Thanks Stacy!
The color is fantastic!
Thanks! I am loving it!
Love that the room looks taller with the new shelving. I vote to keep the door black! I think it looks great with the artichoke green.
Thanks! I really debated the door color…but I think black it is going to stay!
